Ocean Song by John T. Scott, American, born 6/30/1940
"Humankind has populated and changed the globe through migration over the waves of space and time. 'Ocean Song' opens the globe into a simple set of rings containing rods that mirror the gentle motion of the ocean using basic ideas of wave physics. These waves travel over the mountains of sea floor, time and space to places where nature's mountains have become mountains of man's dreams from pyramids to skyscrapers.
Ocean Song' is a symbolic abstract statement about our history, wrapped in a dream made of stainless steel."
John T. Scott (1940 - September 1, 2007) was an African-American sculptor, painter, printmaker and collagist. Scott was born on a farm in Gentilly, a historic section of New Orleans, Louisiana. When he was 7 years old, his family moved to the Lower Ninth Ward. Scott is best known for creating large woodcut prints and for his African-Caribbean-New Orleans-inspired kinetic sculptures. Scott had been quoted as saying that he tried to capture the musicality of New Orleans in the colors and rhythms of his sculptures.
