Description
Juli in Peru, between Puno and the Bolivia border, was the most important town in the Lake Titicaca region in the early colonial period. The Dominicans arrived there in 1553, followed by the Jesuits in 1576. As a result the town has not just 1 but 4 impressive colonial churches; it was the centre from which missionaries converted the people of the Andean altiplano until the expulsion of the Jesuits from South America in 1767. This is the church of Our Lady of the Assumption / Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, built by the Dominicans in the renaissance style from 1562-1676. After being abandoned for many years it was restored in the early 2000s and is now a museum containing an important collection of religious paintings and works of art.
