Nude Painting: 'Alfons Niex'
This potrait instantly resonates with the quote. The oil painting shows a women's arm covering her face as she leans against the desk, her hair draped over her head in despair. She appears to be sitting in a chair that along with the other colours in the background appear to show a lot of texture which helps brighten the females features. This instantly shows she's submissive and sad. Even though a man isn't shown in the image it could easily imply that a male is of some sorts dominant over the weeping women.
The light textures of her body along with the background shows she is fragile and insecure, not very happy in her environment. In the past it was often socially acceptable that the male would be dominant over the women. The women however would suffer in silence as she had to put up with the violent and sexual treatment from the male. It does in a way question the role of people in relationships.
Does someone being dominant and submissive create an unhealthy relationship? Or does in today's society being submissive mean you have trust in your partner and their protection, letting them take control and forefilling you desires? Either way the quote shows that she is submissive but on the other hand it shows that she isn't happy about being controlled or avalible to others who use her for their own needs.
