Description
The man shown in the photograph is my grandfather. He immigrated to North Dakota, USA from Norway with his parents at the age of six to settle on virgin grass land at the upper reaches of the Goose River. Their first home was a dugout, which the dug into the steep river bank and shored up on the inside with timbers.
When he grew up, he moved about two miles up the river and farmed there for the rest of his life. He hated tractors and farmed only with horses until he retired.
I didn't know him well. He could not speek English well enogh to carry on a conversation, and since my parents never spoke Norwegian to us children, we never learned it.
Fine art black and white photograph by Donald Erickson.
