Description
Night watch in Renaissance Cape depicting man like God christian Jesus standing at the shoreline of the lake holding a lantern to protect the villagers. The night sky is filled with stars and the moon.
The original painting was painted by a French artist, who lived from 1730–1780. It has been dragged kicking and screming into the contemporary realm in this painting. It depicts one of his most famous paintings titled "The Watch of the Lagoon at Night," which is about a group of people working on a nighttime shift. The painting shows the workers carrying torches and lanterns while they stand guard outside a medieval castle.
In this case, I thought it would be interesting to have an image of the hero as if he were the protector of the village instead of the villager being protected. He stands there with a torch and lantern protecting those around him against the unknown darkness.
"I know you are worried for your daughter. I can only imagine what that must feel like." She spoke quietly so no one else could hear them.
He looked up at her briefly before looking back down to the papers again. He seemed uncomfortable with having someone speak to him so openly when he had been hiding himself away all day long.
"Do you think she will ever come back?" Her voice sounded hopeful but also afraid. She wanted her daughter to return more than anything else, even though she knew that wasn't likely. But still, she couldn't help but hope.
"If she wants to, then yes, she'll probably come back here." His answer came out quiet and soft, but strong and sure.
She nodded slowly as she listened intently. This made her believe in him more. There was something reassuring about knowing that he cared enough to try to comfort her.
"Thank you," she whispered. Then, after another pause, she asked, "How did you end up becoming the Duke?"
"That's quite a story. You wouldn't want me to bore you with it right now, though," he said.
"No, that sounds fine. I'm interested in hearing it. I've never really met anyone important or rich before. All I have ever done is work hard my whole life and take care of my family." She smiled brightly as she continued.
His face softened as he watched her. He felt guilty for not telling her earlier how much he liked seeing her smile.
"Well, where do I begin? Let's see… My father died when I was just a boy; my mother took over running the estate until I was old enough to become a steward. When I was fifteen years old, we got word that the King was going to be passing through our area on his way to the capital. We were expecting a visit from him any time soon since he usually stopped in every year or two. So, naturally, my mother decided to prepare us for his arrival.
"We worked tirelessly cleaning and preparing for his visit, hoping to make it seem as though we hadn't been living under our own roof for months. When the king arrived, I was nervous, excited, and terrified all at once. I'd never seen a real king before, let alone spoken to one.
"When the king stepped off his horse onto our property, I nearly fainted from excitement. I remember thinking that I was finally a part of the royal court. I followed him inside the house, eager to meet the rest of the guests. I stood near the door and waited patiently to greet the other members of the party. I was shaking, trying to keep myself calm.
"It didn't take long before I spotted her among the crowd. I tried to catch her attention, but she was surrounded by too many people. As soon as they left the room, I ran to find her. When I reached her side, I realized who she was immediately. That woman was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen in my entire life! I think you know the rest of the story dear, he said with a soft smile, patting her flaxen hair.
