Description
Niagara -on-the-Lake was the first capitol of Upper Canada, it was moved during the War of 1812, to York (now Toronto) after being taken by American forces during a two day cannon bombardment from Fort Niagara and the American Fleet.
Originally called Butlersburg, the Town received official status in 1781 as Newark, a British military post. Later it changed names, once to Niagara & in the 1880's to Niagara-on-the-Lake which is now a year round world tourist and Shaw Theatre destination. It still boasts of many original 1700 and 1800 houses along with the historical Laura Seacord settlement and world entertainment festival events. Fort George sits along the Niagara trail a favourite bicycle and pedestrian path which follows the Niagara river to the Falls. The area is also a great wine growing region due to its location below the Niagara escarpment and bordering Lake Ontario. The Prince of Wales Hotel is a landmark and is the defacto town centre where one can catch a horse and carriage ride year round.
