Description
Puma concolor is the most widespread of the wild terrestrial mammals in the Americas with a range spanning from the Canadian Yukon to the southern Andes. And over this vast range comes a number of regional names, including cougar, mountain lion, puma, panther, painter and catamount. No matter what the name, in most regions of the continents this animal is the top predator, the King of the Mountain.
The mountain lion is the second largest cat in the New World after the jaguar, but the jaguar’s range is now limited to Mexico and Central America, though they are known to travel Arizona on occasion.
This big guy is in reality a captive mountain lion at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum near Tucson, Arizona. Normally nocturnal, this big guy is serenely patrolling his large enclosure on a cool spring afternoon. The protective coloration of the mountain lion makes them very difficult to see in their native habitats. I have seen them in the wild from the Olympic Mountains and around Mount Rainier to here in the Tucson Mountains, and the only time my camera was close at hand I thought for a moment I might have to use it with the tripod as a club. But by their nature the big cats are usually very shy of two-leggeds, and the glimpses have been fleeting, including in my own neighborhood.
How do you tell the difference between a bobcat on your roof, and a mountain lion? The bobcat makes a 'pitter-patter-pitter-patter-pat-pat-pat-pat' noise...The mountain lion makes a distinctively loud 'thumpety-thumpety-thump-thump-thump-thump' sound. My poor house cat couldn't figure out where in the house to hide!

Looks as if he's looking for a nice, comfy spot to take a nap. Great image of this handsome fella, my dear friend. It's amazing how he blends in with his surroundings. L/F Featured in American Desert Southwest.

Thank you for this wonderful comment, Jane! These cats are masters at concealment, as this guy's blending in with the rocks illustrates. I appreciate the honor of being featured in this wonderful art group.
