A beautiful winter morning at Beavertail Lighthouse, near Jamestown and Newport Rhode Island! After having only a few minutes of light for sunset several days earlier, I drove out for a look in the beautiful morning light. There are gorgeous rock formations all around, it is spectacular! Note to self....next time do not wear Dansko shoes for climbing on the rocks. Beavertail Light is located on the southernmost tip of Conanicut Island, which separates the East and West Passages of Narragansett Bay. The lighthouse is located on a rocky windswept point that looks south to the open Atlantic Ocean. Beavertail Lighthouse is the third-oldest lighthouse in North America. This site has hosted beacons and lighthouses since at least 1705. The current lighthouse dates from 1856 and is still an active USGS aid to navigation. On another day, I made it out here to see the beautiful sunrise and rock formations lying below the lighthouse structure. The site is located in a park and is freely accessible for viewing, although the tower itself is not open.
