Description
The morenada is one of the most popular and best known dances in Bolivia, with many groups performing it at major festivals across the country. It is thought to have orginated among African slaves brought to the country during the colonial period, though there are several other theories. The characters and masks are parodies of the Spanish colonial rulers and the suffering of the slaves; as always the dance and costumes have evolved and become more elaborate and spectacular over time. This image was taken at the Oruro Carnival, one of the most famous festivals in South America and a UNESCO registered cultural heritage event.
