Description
After discovering some of my dad's unfinished drawings of beautiful Waterloo and Wellington County, Ontario barn hex designs, I thought it was a shame to loose these beautiful designs so I decided to complete some that I loved. This is the maple leaf hex design which was based on the original Pennsylvania Dutch barn hex signs.
Distelfinks, hearts, leaves, flowers and stars - the elements that make up the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch hex designs all had special meanings. It was the belief of these German settlers that created their new home in North America in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, that these designs would bring blessings and good fortune to the home and family in the form of good luck, fertility, love, happiness, good health and many other desirable wishes. These folk art style designs referred to as hex signs were an important part in their culture and traditions. They decorated their farmhouses inside and out with these hand-painted geometric designs, painting them on many household items, above doorways and on their barns.
Today Dutch Hex Signs are enjoyed by people around the world who hang them on their sheds, homes, barns and garages, above doorways, in workshops, and many other locations. Shown here is the colorful maple leaf design with four hearts and helicopter seeds in the center surrounded by four seasonal maple leaves encased in a white circle of purity, a green scalloped circle of endless joy within a black circle of strength that symbolizes eternal luck and success. Some of today's barn quilts are based on these traditional Pennsylvania Dutch elements.
