Description
Mangrove roots. Close-up of the aerial roots of a mangrove plant (Rhizophora sp.) in a swamp. The mangrove is a tropical plant which inhabits brackish water in tropical and sub-tropical areas. The prominent aerial roots seen here help to stabilise the plant in the soft mud. These roots trap soil and silt and aid the formation of new land in coastal areas. The roots also provide support for seedlings, which are unique in that they germinate while still attached to the parent plant. Only after weeks of growth do the seedlings drop off to find their own patch in which to grow.
