When I saw this tiny bird flicking around this Pine, I thought it was a hummingbird until I got a closer look, it was moving so fast, this was the only shot I managed to get. Photo taken at San Rafael Park in early Spring, Reno Nevada
A tiny bird seemingly overflowing with energy, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet forages almost frantically through lower branches of shrubs and trees. Its habit of constantly flicking its wings is a key identification clue. Smaller than a warbler or chickadee, this plain green-gray bird has a white eyering and a white bar on the wing. Alas, the male's brilliant ruby crown patch usually stays hidden, your best chance to see it is to find an excited male singing in spring or summer. Overall, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet is olive above and white below. The two white wing bars and yellow on the flight and tail feathers is readily observed in the field. Except for the hummingbirds, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet is one of the smallest of our native birds. It is only 3.75 to 4.5 inches long with a wingspan of 6.75 to 7.5 inches and a weight of 6 to 8 grams.
