In Northern Minnesota, early Spring was time for gathering sap from maple trees and boiling it down to make syrup. It takes constant stirring and stoking the fire to boil down 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. This scene captures the process as my grandfather and uncle boil down another batch of golden brown maple syrup. The reference photo this painting was based on was taken in the late 1930s or early 1940s.

The translucent quality of watercolor lets the paper reflect light to create an inner glow that gives the painting more life. I enjoy both plein air (painting on location) and working in my studio in Northern Minnesota. I try to capture a sense of presence and a fresh look at the subject.
 I am a member of the Northstar Watermedia Society and the Minnesota Watercolor Society. My paintings have been in juried exhibits, galleries and private collections throughout the region.
