Description
Lymph gland. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a lymph gland (node). The notch at upper left is the hilum. Lymph vessels bringing lymph to the node (afferent) enter from several directions, but lymph vessels leaving the node (efferent) originate from the hilum. The node has an outer capsule and the body of the node is divided into an outer cortex (deep red) and an inner medulla with sinuses (white). The cortex is packed with lymphocytes (produced in follicles, dark brown-red) that filter out foreign substances and destroy them. Magnification: x2 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
