Description
This bronze relief sculpture is on top of the tomb of Lt. John Rodgers Meigs, of the Union Army, who died during the American Civil War. The sculpture replicates his actual life image and has him wearing his lieutenant's uniform, but he is dead and lying in mud, similar to how his body was found on the night he was killed in 1864 near Dayton, Virginia (the sculpture is two-thirds the life size of Lt. Meigs). He was the son of Brigadier General Montgomery C. Meigs, the Quartermaster General of the United States Army, and he is buried next to his father and other family members in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, DC, his hometown. President Abraham Lincoln attended his funeral, along with other dignitaries, including Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War, who eulogized the young man as "One of the youngest and brightest of the military profession . . . he has fallen as an early victim to murderous rebel warfare".
