Description
5 black birds all face the rising sun with beaks parted. The sun began to rise and I could feel the heat on my shoulders. The days were 117 degrees here in Phoenix, Arizona. My grandson was about to be born. One morning, I stood taking in all the sensations as the golden sun rose higher and higher into the sky. It was 86 degrees and I took my walk. I made my way to the park and I could feel the thick air press on my lungs. I looked around wondering how I was going to make it through this heat.
It was at that moment my eyes looked down upon a flock of black birds standing, only a few feet away, in a disappearing shadow of a tree. They held their little faces up to the sun with beaks parted breathing in the last cool breaths of morning. My heart still swells to remember this one still moment of life that was so meaningful to me. As I stood watching these birds, I felt myself completely adjust to the heat. No longer was it thick and dry and inhospitable. It was now a part of me and so were those birds. I was reborn into this warm Phoenix. I will never forget that feeling of relaxing into it and accepting it. Such a rich lesson arose out of that experience that I am capable of anything.
