Fantastic detail, light, color and especially expression in this wonderful close-crop portrait. Such funny birds! Congratulations on your tie for 2nd in the Pelicans, Pelicans and More Pelicans contest.
Dale Nelson replied:
Thank you Nikolyn. The image is virtually full frame, only cropped a bit at the bottom to provide consistent image proportions. I was sitting at the top of the cliff with my 100-400 lens after a storm and the birds flew to me and landed within 8-12 feet. For this shot, the lens was at 400mm.

Jennie Marie Schell
Fantastic capture of detail and color!
Dale Nelson replied:
Thank you Jennie. In breeding plumage, they have amazing color and these guys flew in to me as I sat on the cliffs. Some only 8 feet away.

Awesome close up- amazing details! - v/f/g+
Dale Nelson replied:
Thank you Alexandra. Because I got to the site as the storm was ending, The birds had not yet returned, so I just sat waiting to catch them flying in. I did not expect them to come, land and start preening almost within reaching distance.

Great image - great story ! .......+V
Dale Nelson replied:
Thanks Larry. Amazing birds and LaJolla CA is one of the best places to get near them at cliffs.

Oh, Wow! This a stunning capture! v/f
Dale Nelson replied:
Thanks Betty. They are stunning in breeding plumage. I was less than 10 feet away with a 100-400 lens. I was sitting on the wet cliffs after a big rainstorm, no birds to be found, then the sky opened up and the birds started flying in and came right to me. I just kept sitting in my puddle and started taking pictures. I was surrounded by Brown Pelicans, Gulls, and Cormorant. I have shot there before and since, but never with conditions like that.
