Description
"Look Out Below" - an original fine art photograph by John Bartelt - Copyright 2010-2017 All Rights Reserved - was photographed at Pueblo Lake State Park, in Pueblo, Colorado.
Eagles have an inner eyelid which is translucent and is referred to as a nictating membrane. This membrane moves across the eye side to side every three to four seconds to help shield it and to keep the eye wet and clear. Thus a bald eagle can quickly refocus between far and near things, which in turn is a very useful ability while preying for food. This image captured the nictating membrane moving across the eagle's eye.
