Description
Standing sentinel, a lone pine grows boldly on the hillside.
There’s something about a tree growing all by itself – whether in a meadow, on a hillside, or set against the cliffs – that inspires us to think better, higher thoughts. The lone tree, growing despite its aloneness, growing possibly in a hostile environment where other trees have given up, inspires us in our own journey of life, when we frequently feel that we, too, are battling the elements and moving forward despite little encouragement or support.
All of us have felt this way at some time or another, and given that many cultures, not the least of which is American business culture, emphasize the importance of fitting into the group, it is no wonder that we feel out of step when we look around and find that we are alone on a particular endeavor.
Lone Pine invites us into the landscape of this brave, stalwart tree, captured with broad, sweeping brush strokes in a highly impressionist style. It is quiet here, with an impressive view of the valley below, and the lone pine has a perspective on its surroundings that the cluster of trees hidden below, growing in a group next to the river, do not have. They look up – in so far as they can with the branches of others blocking their view – and see the lone pine standing straight and strong, and they wonder – “What is it doing up there? What does it feel like to be the lone pine at the side of the hill? Why does it not join the group?”
An excellent question, and one that we all battle when we strike out on our own, determined to pursue a dream and reach for a goal. “Why don’t you do it the way other people do it?” such people are asked, or, more forcibly, “Why do you always have to be so different?”
Why indeed? But then again, why not?
