Description
Trichomonas in cervix. Light micrograph of a cervical smear showing an infection of Trichomonas vaginalis. Trichomonas is a one-celled protozoan, seen here as small purple ill-defined structures (at centre, upper right). The larger epithelial cells of the cervix are seen (pink & blue) amongst red blood cells throughout the image. Trichomonas vaginalis is usually sexually trans- mitted, provoking inflammation of the vagina and cervix associated with a frothy discharge. Men usually have no symptoms but may show signs of nonspecific urethritis. Treatment is with the drug metronidazole. Cells stained with Papanicolaou. Magnification: x400 at 35mm size.
