This male American goldfinch is vibrant yellow with a black cap and wings. Males also have white markings on its wings and an orange beak. Its bright plumage stands out more during the breeding season. During the wintertime males are usually an olive color and females are mostly brown, lighter on the underside with a yellow bib. The goldfinch also has good eyesight. I have read that, because their eyes are positioned on the sides of their head, they have a limited range of binocular vision where the eyes overlap. This limits their range of depth perception, and they must move their heads around to compare different images from the same eye to perceive depth.
