Description
Just a the sun drops below the horizon, canoe paddlers bring in boat loads of lit lanterns, to be released in the Bay off Magic Island at Ala Moana State Park, Honolulu, Hawaii.
A Japanese tradition, the first Lantern Floating Hawaii ceremony on Memorial Day was held in 1999 at Keehi Lagoon a bit northwest of Magic Island where it is presently held to accommodate greater numbers of attendees. It has grown each year in response to community demand. Thoughts and prayers from around the globe are set afloat to create a moment of collective remembrance, harmony and international friendship.
The artist, Mary Deal, is also an award-winning author of mystery/thrillers, a short story collection and writers' reference books. Read about it here:
