The name Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin, which means "Observing the Sounds (or Cries) of the World". Also spelled Kwan Yin and Kuan Yin, Some Buddhists believe that when one of their adherents departs from this world, they are placed by Guanyin in the heart of a lotus, and then sent to the western pure land of Sukhāvatī.[
It is generally accepted among East Asian adherents that Guanyin originated as the Sanskrit Avalokiteśvara (अवलोकितेश्वर). Commonly known in English as the Mercy Goddess or Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin is also revered by Chinese Taoists as an immortal. In Chinese folk religion there are mythical accounts about Guanyin's origins that are not associated to the Avalokiteśvara described in Buddhist sutras. She is also known in China as the Protector of seafarers.

When I was age 10 my very first memorable art teacher was a Navaho lady in California where I grew up, who kindly taught me without charge how to draw with pencil and charcoal. She was a master at drawing and painting horses. She encouraged me saying I was born for art. As a teen I was always finding work on weekends painting all sorts of things for people. It was the 60's so I had a string of psychedelic posters, hippy busses and motorcycle paintings to keep me busy. I also helped design concert posters in the San Francisco bay area from '67 to '68 till the family and I moved to Oregon.
