Description
Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world (3,812 m or 12,507 ft). He is situated in a basin between the Andean chains and created by strike-slip movement along regional faults. The surface area covers 8,372 km2 (3,232 sqmi).
Since pre-Columbian times the local totora reed was used for boats like this and also for artificial islands. The locals (Uros) helped the Norwegian ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl to build his Ra II, with which he showed, that it is possible to cross an ocean with such material and historic skills.
