A visit to the northern part of the westernmost inhabited Hawaiian island of Kauai is incomplete without visiting this little jewel called Kilauea point. This lava peninsula has its own micro ecosystem and is a haven for different species of birds. It is also home to Kilauea lighthouse, which has cemented its place in the National Register of Historic Places. Constructed on land purchased from the Kilauea Sugar Plantation Company construction commenced in 1912 and the lighthouse began its operation in May 1913. The Fresnel lens used in the lighthouse is only one of seven second order Fresnel lenses remaining in a lighthouse in use in the US.
Kilauea Point offers unobstructed panoramic views of the peaceful Pacific Ocean and is a great place to be at before Sunrise, take in the Sunrise and then head up to the visitors center for a brief history of this peaceful place.
In this photograph I've attempted to give the beautiful lighthouse the vintage look, perhaps the way it would've looked way back in the early years following its completion.
