Jizo is a bodhisattva known as Ksitigarbha in Sanskrit, one of the four principal bodhisattvas of Mahayana Buddhism (Bodhisattva is often translated as 'saint' - someone who is within reach of achieving enlightenment and Buddhahood, but who has decided to postpone doing so until he/she has achieved certain things in this world).

In Japan, he is sometimes respectfully referred to as Ojizo-sama, especially by women. He is seen as the guardian of children, especially those who die before their parents and in particular, stillborn or aborted foetuses. He is also seen as a protector of travellers and saviour of souls suffering in hell; thus statues of him are common beside roads and in graveyards.
