FAA WATERCOLOR MARK DOES NOT APPEAR ON FINAL SALES
After listening to all of the various stories I have heard on the TV and from friends about how this is the coldest February New York has suffered through and how the waterways in Manhattan for example the Hudson River and Long Island's north and south shores are frozen over I decided this past weekend on Saturday to take a ride and see just how bad the weather had effected the waterways of New York. I took a ride to the Nautical Mile in Freeport, New York located on the south shore of Long Island known for its great year round private charter fishing boat trips and party fishing boats which are boats much larger that usually will take out 100 fisherman. The Nautical Mile is an inlet that leads out to the Atlantic Ocean. When I arrived I drove my car up and down and could not believe what I was seeing. I then parked my car and climbed down a 45 degree walkway that led me to the docks and fingers that create slips for the boats. This area is a place I come to quite a bit year round and there are always boats in the water. I stood on the ice to take this photo which is where a boat would have been docked if it had been there. I wanted to capture the finger of the dock frozen solid to the pole ready to crack and the boat in the background frozen in it's slip unable to get out. The Nautical Mile, the inlet to the Atlantic Ocean was completely frozen over not one boat was able to get out or come in. The site was remarkable as this is the time of season on Long Island when sport fisherman would be going for cod and ling, I spoke to several captains and they said they had pulled their boats out and are just going to have to wait till the end of March and start flounder fishing. I have never seen Long Island effected this badly by the cold weather.
