Description
Inhibition of Escherichia coli bacteria. Close-up of a petri dish culture Enterococcus bacteria (green) and Escherichia coli bacteria (brown) on a chromogenic agar medium. The first section shows a heavy growth of Enterococci while E. coli bacteria have been inhibited due to antibiotic substances from the urine specimen that had been applied on the agar. The pattern seen here is due to the streaking technique used to apply the urine sample to the agar. E. coli bacteria are a normal part of the intestinal flora in humans and other animals, where they aid digestion. However, some strains can produce a toxin that leads to severe illness, or even death. Normal strains can also produce infections in those with weakened immune systems.
