Inflamed lymph gland. Light micrograph of a transverse section through an acutely inflamed lymph gland. The swelling of this lymph gland (node) is seen here by the presence of more follicles (purple areas) than normal, more reticular fibres, and cellular debris (black areas). The acute inflammation of the lymph glands is called lymphadenopathy, and occurs when the body is fighting a virulent disease. Examples include bubonic plague, anthrax, measles, toxoplasmosis, Hodgkin's lymphoma, carcinoma, and silicosis. Magnification: x3.5 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
