Human chromosomes. Collage of coloured scanning electron micrographs (SEMs) of human chromosomes. Chromosomes are a packaged form of a cell's genetic material DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The DNA condenses into chromosomes during cell replication. Each chromosome consists of two identical strands (chromatids), aligned parallel to each other and joined at an area called a centromere (some highlighted here). The terminal regions (teleomeres) are also highlighted for some of these chromosomes. The XY sex chromosomes are among the images at top centre. A cell is at top left.
