Description
During a recent trip to western New Jersey, I was driving along the road when I came across this horse grazing in a field, on a farm, behind a white wooden fence. The horse was brown with a white stripe down his nose, and he seemed very friendly. He came right up to the white fence when I walked over to him, and he seemed to be posing for the camera. He let me capture this Horse Portrait, with his head peeking over the white fence.
Depending on breed and the environment, horses can live anywhere from 25 to 30 years. A colt is a male horse under the age of four. A filly is a female horse under the age of 4. A foal is a horse of either sex less than one year old. A gelding is a castrated male horse of any age. A mare is a female horse four years and older. A Stallion is a non-castrated male horse four years and older. A yearling is a horse of either sex that is between one and two years old. The size of a horse varies by breed. Light riding horses are usually 56 to 64 inches tall, while larger riding horses are anywhere from 62 to 68 inches tall. Horses can be an array of colors with distinct markings. A horse is often first classified by its coat color before its breed or sex. Gestation lasts about 340 days and usually results in one foal, usually born in the Spring. Their skeletons have an average of 205 bones and they lack a collarbone. They are herbivores and eat grasses and other plant materials. They have the largest eyes of any land mammal. Their range of vision is more than 350 degrees. Their vision is in 2 colors but is excellent in both the day and night time. Their sense of smell is better than humans but not as good as a dog's. They have good hearing, great balance and an advanced sense of taste. They move with four basic gaits: the four-beat walk, the two-beat trot or jog, the canter or lope (three beat gait), and the gallop. They are prey and herd animals with a hierarchy of rank. They sleep both standing up and lying down and sleep better in groups. They spend 14 to 15 hours a day standing in rest and total sleep time in a day may range from a few minutes to a couple hours. They are used in sport, work, entertainment, Therapeutic, warfare and products.
