Description
Not all trees are green, and not all golden meadows are just gold – the colors of nature and the country are as varied and variegated as Nature herself. When one takes a country walk into the hills, there is an explosion of color all around. Sometimes that color is vibrant and pulsating; other times, as in the artwork Home Country, the colors are gentle, quiet, but persistent.
Seeing the color in a landscape takes time on the part of the hiker, stroller, or even person driving through the area. One cannot simply plow through without looking – you have to stop, breathe (if you have been hiking hard, a rest like this is never amiss), and take in the panorama before you.
Home Country reminds us that life does not have to be constantly “on” – in a state of hectic business in which we move from one task to the next without, well, thinking. Home Country, which celebrates the landscapes and vistas of the country and rural lands, invites us to pause and think, view the beauty, and gently allow our mind to wander, to daydream, to focus on elements other than what we see as modern life.
It goes without saying that, when one hikes in a place like Home Country, it is best to turn the phone off, because interruptions only push us back into the noise, confusion, anxiety, and tension. But the beauty of the rural country is also its frustration: many times, in isolated places like the landscape shown in Home Country, there is no cell service, so the silence of the lands is not interrupted by buzzes, dings, rings, and random electronic music.
Life in nature goes on at its pace, and when it is not encroached upon by modern demands, nature’s pace takes us to a point of timelessness – this is how things have been, for a long long time, and it’s worth absorbing the silence.
