This portrait of a Ferruginous Hawk was captured at Lake Pueblo State Park in southern Colorado. The species can be found in prairies, deserts, and open range of the western United States. The Ferruginous Hawk is the largest Buteo species in North America, with a wingspan of nearly 1.5 meters. It is an open-country species that inhabits grasslands, shrub-steppes, and deserts of North America, nesting in 17 states within the United States and 3 provinces in Canada. The primary prey of the Ferruginous Hawk are jackrabbits, ground squirrels, and prairie dogs. Its populations and reproduction can fluctuate with the availability of these prey. During winter, the species typically aggregates where ground squirrels and especially prairie dogs are numerous. The Ferruginous Hawk is a “sit-and-wait” hunter, and individuals often perch in and around prairie dog towns.
