Description
Harbor Springs, Michigan is a beautiful little resort town just south of the Mackinaw Bridge at the northern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The town is sheltered by Little Traverse Bay on the SHores of Lake MIchigan. The town gets it's name from the natural springs that flow into the harbor and also supply some very cold refreshing drinking waterfrom some of the free flowing drining fountains in the area.
I lived in Harbor Springs for three years, moving there right after my high school graduation in Cheboygan Michigan. Even though I lived there for only three short years the town left a permanent imprint in my heart.
According to the 2010 census the city of Harbor Springs encompasses 1.3 square miles and has a population of 1,194 permanent residents.
During the summer the area explodes with tourism and the sleepy little town comes alive. There are many golf courses in the area. There are many beaches for swimming, local campgrounds, and resorts. The town has many coffee shops resteraunts, gallerys, three bars, and other botique shops that draw tourist from all over. The lakes during the summer offer sailing, boating, swimming and fishing.
During the winter the lakes freeze over and the bay becomes dotted with fish shanties. Also during the winter there are two local ski resorts and miles of snow mobile trails.
The beauty of the area is in many cases very hard to capture as it is at times overwhelming.
