The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is a wonderful, off-the-beaten-path treasure with a fascinating geological history. Once we discovered it, we wondered why we'd never gone there before. Located in southern Colorado in the San Luis Valley near Alamosa, the park itself includes over 40,000 acres and the preserve includes another 40,000+ protected acres. The park offers the opportunity to enjoy either the desert or the mountains. The play of light and shadow in this black and white conversion shows off the beautiful lines and shapes of the high desert country and Sangre de Cristo range in the background. The image is also available in color and can be seen in my "The Southwest - Colorado" gallery.
