Description
Westminster Abbey will always hold a special spot in my heart as it was the first Medieval church I set foot in. Yet even without that personal connection, many of us have seen the Abbey on TV again and again. It's been the site for the coronations, weddings and funerals of royals for a thousand years. And in these days of mass media, anyone with a passing interest in things British or royal have likely seen the church many times over even if they have never been lucky enough to visit in person.
This textured work is based off of a photo I took of the beautiful Gothic cathedral on my last visit. I have found this angle of the church to be uniquely tough to capture the way I have envisioned it and have actually made attempts on each visit. I had no desire to include the busy intersection and streets directly in front wanting to concentrate instead on the sweeping lines of the church (they were designed to lead your eyes up to the heavens). And I'm sure if and when I return again, I'll tackle this yet again because that's the way I am.
Yet if by some awful stroke of fate I was never to return, I have to say I would be happy with this as my last image of the cathedral. I feel I've caught a great mood here and the architecture of the church really shines through. And I love the small details like the silhouettes on the sidewalk in the bottom left.
Westminster Abbey is along with the Palace of Westminster and Saint Margaret's Church a UNESCO designated World Heritage Centre.
