Description
Alexander Men, Orthodox Russian Priest, was martyred on the way through the forest to lead the liturgy. Three masked men murdered him with an axe, crushing his skull. (1935-1990) The excellent biography about him included a blurred black and white photo of that path. As Lent approached this year, I re-read the book and remained fixed upon that scene. To me the sky seeme opaque in the photo, which I portrayed with an antique gold, but with blue underpainting to reveal heaven breaking through at 'thin places.' The path reflected the gold. With background of the evergreen trees, I imagined the deciduous trees with bright yellow leaves drifting down to the forest floor. Some bright red indicates blood in the far end of the path where the crime was committed. But Alexander Men's story and his life, which had endured the persecution of Christianity in Russia during most of that time, shines forth as example and testimony of courage and faith in action.
