Description
"Gošafoss Aurora, Skjįlfandafljót, Noršurland Eystra, Iceland"
In the year 1,000, the pagan Norse chieftains of Iceland met to discuss the future of their religion after the introduction of Christianity. With no bloodshed, the Icelanders declared Christianity to be the official religion of Iceland; but granting people the freedom to practice their traditional Norse religion in private. Following his return from this meeting, Žorgeir Ljósvetningagoši, (a once pagan chieftain - now Christian), threw his stone statues and symbols of the Norse Gods and religion into the waterfall. This symbolic gesture of Icelandic history is what gave the waterfall its name, "Gošafoss," ("Waterfall of The Gods").
