Description
“Before we begin, we always give thanks to the Creator for giving us this day, and for giving us the ability to make tomorrow better.”
––Theron “Ike” Carter
The music heritage project on which I’ve been working with famed radio station programmer and jazz griot Theron “Ike” Carter for the past 15 months has been both educational and inspirational. In addition to accumulating extensive notes on different traditions of Afrocentric music––Jazz, Gospel, the Blues, Rhythm & Blues, Hip-Hop, Reggae––I’ve learned quite a bit regarding the history of our hometown: Savannah, Georgia (USA). Inspiration-wise, our video-recorded and photographed interviews have yielded some important images. One is the combination digital photograph, photo-painting, seen here.
In this fine art photography, Ike Carter (who prefers the term “African-American classical music” to jazz) is seen standing meditatively before a vintage promotional poster of legendary jazz trumpeter and composer Miles Davis. The flames in the fireplace and different works of art upon the wall further enhanced an atmosphere already charged with powerful creative energies.
The quote above Mr. Carter’s head is one that his many listeners are accustomed to hearing because it is a spiritual acknowledgement with which he begins signature broadcasts/streaming from the studios of WHCH at HBCU Savannah State University.
It is especially appropriate to share this image at this time became May 26, 1926, is Miles Davis’s birthday. In honor of that event, Carter is streaming programs showcasing his music throughout the month of May. In addition, the month of June is African-American Music Appreciation Month, or Black Music Month. These different variables make elements make MILES DAVIS AND IKE CARTER GIVING THANKS a perfect purchase for music fans, educators, collectors, and supporters of the Music Heritage Fundraiser Project.

Thank you Aziza for checking out GIVING THANKS WITH MILES DAVIS & IKE CARTER, and for sharing your experience of listening to Miles Davis as a teenager. Davis is one of Ike Carter's favorite giants of jazz and I've learned a lot about his music and life over the past year.
