Description
We have dozens of these Gila Woodpeckers who visit our feeders. We believe some of them are the same ones returning year after year, bring their young. Usually the males that are larger.
Most possess white, black, brown, green, yellow and red plumage, although many show a certain amount of grey and olive green. In woodpeckers, many species exhibit patches of red and yellow on their heads and bellies, and these bright areas are important in signaling. The dark areas of plumage are often iridescent. Although the sexes of tend to look alike, many woodpecker species have more prominent red or yellow head markings in males than in females.
The back and wings of this bird are spotted and barred with a black and white zebra-like pattern. The neck, throat, belly and head are greyish-tan in color. The male has a small red cap on the top of the head. Females and juveniles are similar, but both lack the red cap of the adult male. White wing patches are prominent in flight. The dark tail has white bars on the central tail feathers. They range from 8 to10 in length.
This woodpecker's habitat consists of low desert scrub typical of the Sonoran desert. They build nests in holes made in saguaro cacti or mesquite trees. Cavities excavated by these woodpeckers in saguaro cacti are later used by a variety of other species, including the Elf Owl. There, they typically lay 3 to 5 white eggs.

Bob and Nadine Johnston replied:
Over 75 years of observing paintings in the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, taking photos since I was six, with a camera that had a variable aperture and shutter. Became a Pro taking photos for the Boston Record American and Globe at 12, mostly pics of fires, as my dad was a fireman and hung out at the firehouse. If a second alarm came in, would jump on my bike and go... so got better pics than Reporters who had to come across the city. By the time they got there, it was mostly out. Painting off and on with water color since 1935. Discovered acrylics decades later watching Nadine, and picked up a brush again. BUT, more than anything, put in a LOT of HOURS, after retiring. The first two years, painted 10-12 hours a day, 7 days a week. In a year made more progress than in 10 years prior.... Nadine has always painted many hours a day, since 1949-50
