Description
When I first visited Merida several years ago, I was determined to spend a day on the beach. There was one much closer than Celestun, but I had heard good things about the little seaside Mexican town on the Yucatan coast. It was, at the time at least, a bit more off the tourist trail. In fact, the bulk of the tourists I met on the beach that day were from other parts of Mexico checking out the large nature preserve there.
It was less crowded and the seaside felt almost pristine, untouched by man. No soaring skyscrapers overlooking those beautiful tropical waters. Even the tourist boats had a time worn feel, as if they had lived other lives before they ferried tourists along the coast. I spent a lot of time walking that beach and being enthralled by the colors of the gulf waters before taking my own boat ride. And I wished and still wish for more time at Celestun some day.
Aside from the gorgeous colors of this seascape, what I most like about it is that the small details in the scene tell a story. From the boat in the foreground waiting for a group of tourists to the one in the distance speeding past, and including the small group of swimmers that appear to be almost on the horizon. It's as if I've captured a range of human experience. But it's all ultimately about having fun on the Gulf of Mexico in those beautiful tropical-hued waters.
