Description
This superb stone carving depicting the Flight into Egypt is above one of the doorways of the Monastery of San Paio de Antealtares in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, northwest Spain. The monastery was founded in the 11th century by Alfonso II of Asturias as a Benedictine monastery to promote the worship of the then recently discovered tomb with the body of St James the Great (the apostle who brought Christianity to the Iberian Peninsula). King Alfonso II also ordered a church to be built on the site of the tomb, which has since been replaced and expanded over the centuries to become the famous Santiago de Compostela cathedral. Most of the present day monastery building dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Santiago de Compostela's Old Town and cathedral were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
