Description
Fishing at Dusk was the first in a planned series that is called Lakefront Living. In this painting, Im trying to convey the relaxed atmosphere and serenity that my husband Rich and I enjoy as we look out onto Spring Lake each day.
My first love is portrait painting, especially children. So this series features children in classical lake living scenes. While portraits are my first love, the inclusion of landscape areas does allow me to explore the interplay of light and water. Rich and I jointly came up with this narrative scene and searched for the right location to bring a strong classical design to the composition. This location is actually across the lake from our home and studio at the Spring Lake public beach.
The model KC, has such beautiful red hair that I thought would compliment the warm light that appears just past sunset, and what artist doesnt value the warm tones of last light. I have always loved the interplay of lantern light reflecting in water so it was a natural to add it to complete the scene.
The weather was perfect on the evening of the session. The lake had just enough waves to to give the water interest and the sunset was spectacular, producing those wonderful pink streaks in the sky. KC was amazing and posed for a very long time while I positioned him and the other elements of the scene. Rich documented the scene with more than 100 digital reference images while I made color notes and directed KC,.
We returned to the location a couple of times to recreate scene without KC so I could study the interplay of the light from the lantern with the water and rocks as well as the bait can and that classic red tackle box. While we returned to the location several times to capture different elements of the scene we never did experience a sunset as beautiful as the one from the original sitting.
The technique used for this oil painting is often referred to as the Flemish technique which was used by many of the Classical Masters. It involves many layers and the use of transparent oils paints so you are often looking through several layers of paint. In the lighter areas, the light is actually reflecting back off of the white gesso foundation through the layers of paint. This creates a special luminosity to the painting.
