Description
A finial on a fence at the Chapel of Ease on St Helena Island, near Frogmore, Beaufort County, South Carolina. Everybody goes to visit this place...it has a crypt which has been bricked over several times and keeps on getting opened up. The church was abandoned at the start of the Civil War and then was burned in a forest fire in 1868. I have wandered through many ruins and cemeteries but this one has an odd feel to it. It sits right on the highway and the last time I was there another person had just finished up photographing the ruins and a man stopped to chat with me...all friendliness.....but I still felt that cold weirdness....the open crypt, the huge wisteria vines wrapping around everything, the burned shell of the church, all add to the things of ghosts and creepiness. And then there are the legends of that entire area, about fallen soldiers, runaway slaves and odd haunting lights that follow people on that road, all adding up to the willies in broad daylight sometimes.
