Walking the coastal footpath between Martins Bay and Congor Bay, with its steep sides eroding and cascading into the sea below, I came across this ancient ficus. I was drawn to its tangled and gnarled branches and abundant areal roots but these also made the scene very complicated, cluttered and confused.
It took me some time to settle on a composition that, whilst simplifying the scene, retained the complexity of the structure. The afternoon sun illuminated from the right highlighting the lichen growing on the bark.
I decided on a monochrome treatment to obviate any distracting colours and emphasise the structure and texture of the tree.
