This picture is in honor of my Grandfather. Most people never had the honor or privilege to know him, but my Grandfather was a true American hero. Unlike the icons and heroes of today- which consist mostly of celebrities and sports stars, my Grandfather, Donald Ray Williams, was the real thing. He joined the Army Air Force on June 16, 1944 at the age of 15 and flew 17 missions as a flight engineer during WWII. He proudly served his country for 26 years fighting in WWII, The Korean War, and The Vietnam War. He flew over 150 missions and was stationed at 24 bases in 6 different countries during that time.
These items are most of what I have left of him along with a lot of great memories. When he died on October 31, 2010, these items were some of the treasures he held most dear to him and they are part of my fond memories. In this image there is a picture of him around the time that he joined the military (age 15) and entered WWII. Included in the image is a letter he wrote to his mother, his military issued 1940's survival vest, his childhood Bible, dog tags, American Flag, and a rose.
