The milky way raises over a 'log fall' in the Petrified Forest National Park. These are petrified logs tumbling down into a ravine from the top of a mesa as the ground below them erodes with time.

This image was shot during my tenure as the resident artist, part of the "Artist in Residence" program at the Petrified Forest.

Melany Sarafis served her country for 24 years and recently retired from the USAF as a First Sergeant.
