Description
Erosive gastritis. Gastroscope (endoscope) view of the inflamed stomach lining of a 74 year-old man. Also seen are gastric ulcers (one at centre right). Erosive gastritis is a severe form of gastritis (inflammation of the stomach) where the stomach lining is eroded. This can lead to bleeding and perforation of the wall of the stomach. Long-term (chronic) gastritis is associated with smoking and alcoholism. In this case the patient had been taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs and drinking alcohol. Treatment involves ulcer-healing drugs, antacids and a reduction in alcohol consumption.
