Koki is a very special place and in the eastern shadows of Haleakala at sunset so the light is always best in the morning and early in the day. Big Island is on the horizon on the right outside the frame . And you can stand on the cliffs overlooking the beach in the Keawe and Ironwood trees but you must be very careful as it is much higher than appears in this panorama and the sliding sands and cinder will send you right over if you get too close to the edge. The sands are a beautiful burnished golden volcanic red brown and the shelf is relatively shallow for several hundred feet you can walk out into the ocean but you must beware of riptides. I do love Koki .
