Description
Shuri Castle was the Palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom between 1429 to 1879. World War Two battles in Okinawa nearly destroyed it. It was repurposed and converted into a university campus after the war.
In 1992 parts of the castle were largely reconstructed on the original site, based on historical records, photos and memory. Devastation of the castle occurred again however when a fire destroyed the main courtyard structure on Oct 31, 2019. It is again under reconstruction.
It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
